Perry opened the envelope.

Inside was a black-line drawing of a pear with one enormous eye and a whole bunch of wild and twisty lines.

“Color me,” the page seemed to say.

So Perry picked up a green crayon.

Then he noticed a tiny opening near the pear’s stem.

“Wait a minute,” Perry said. “Are you a maze?”

The page did not answer.

Perry followed the path with his finger.

Left.

Then a quick right.

Around and around enough to make him dizzy.

Oh, no.

A dead end.

“You are a sneaky maze,” Perry said.

He colored the dead end light blue.

The next dead end became pink.

The next one became royal blue with yellow polka dots.

Soon the page had rainbow roads, curly rivers, and funny little blobs that made Perry giggle, even though he did not know why.

Perry’s sister looked over his shoulder.

“That’s a map,” she said.

“A map to where?”

“An ice cream shop.”

Their dad walked past.

“Looks like a strange bowl of noodles to me.”

Fruity, the family cat, sat on the corner of the page.

Fruity thought it was a bed.

Perry finally found the path all the way through the maze.

“I made it!” he exclaimed.

Then he looked at everything else on the page.

To his surprise, the path through the maze was not even his favorite part.

Perry slid the picture across the table to his sister.

She added a pink cloud, a ladybug, and a dancing ice cream cone covered in sprinkles.

Earlier, the page had seemed like a drawing to color.

Then it became a maze.

Now it might have been a beautifully decorated map to an ice cream shop.

Tomorrow?

The page was not saying.

It might have had another idea.
